On February 19, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes joined a U.S. nuclear policy webinar hosted by New Internationalist and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) examining the role of U.S. nuclear policy in escalating global nuclear tensions.
Moderated by New Internationalist co-editor Amy Hall, the panel also featured Sophie Bolt of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Ludo De Brabander of Vrede, and Dae-Han Song of the International Strategy Center, the No Cold War Collective, and the Korea Policy Institute.
The discussion raised questions about rising nuclear weapons spending by nuclear-armed states, particularly the United States, and the global reach of U.S. nuclear deployments. The webinar also addressed the presence of U.S. nuclear weapons in several European countries, including Britain, and the implications such deployments may have for the security and sovereignty of host nations.
Panelists considered what these developments mean for global security and explored what actions could support nuclear disarmament and reduce nuclear risks.
