NAPF Peace Award Honoring Pope Francis Received at the Vatican
The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s Distinguished Peace Leader Award honoring the late Pope Francis has now been received at the Vatican by Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S.J., Under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The award recognizes Pope Francis’s moral leadership on nuclear disarmament and his historic stance that both the use and possession of nuclear weapons are morally unacceptable. His strong support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons helped elevate the humanitarian and ethical urgency behind global abolition efforts.
The award was first presented at NAPF’s 38th Evening for Peace on September 26 at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. During the program, Santa Barbara City Councilmember Kristen Sneddon, speaking on behalf of Mayor Randy Rowse, introduced the Santa Barbara City Proclamation declaring September 26 “An Evening for Peace.” The proclamation highlighted NAPF’s more than forty years of local and international leadership and recognized this year’s honorees, Martin Sheen and Pope Francis.
Founded in 1982, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a just and peaceful world free of nuclear weapons. The Foundation continues its work through education, advocacy, and its engagement with the United Nations, including efforts to promote and implement the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Fr. John Dear recognized Pope Francis (posthumously) with the Distinguished Peace Leader Award for his moral leadership on nuclear abolition at the 38th Evening for Peace.
