Marking 81 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation hosted its 32nd Annual Sadako Peace Day on August 6, 2026, in the Sadako Peace Garden at La Casa de Maria in Santa Barbara.
Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Jimmy Hara, the program featured Bob Sedivy, Erica Kokor, Susan Dequesnel, Robb De Forest, Perie Longo, Frank Bognar, Enid Osborn, Michelle KanoeLehua Marsonette, George Yatchisin, and Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes for an evening of music, poetry, remembrance, and reflection.

Jimmy Hideo Hara, MD, FAAFP, a physician, educator, and long-time advocate for community health, peace, and nuclear abolition, passed away on May 14, 2026. At the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, he served as a member of the Board of Directors starting in 2011, and the Board’s Vice Chair since 2023.
In 2011, Jimmy joined the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, where he most recently served as Vice Chair. He was deeply inspired by the “Story of Sadako,” which he shared “solidified why I dedicated my life to this cause—why I believe health professionals should care about nuclear abolition, and why I, as a Japanese American and a physician who saw hibakusha patients firsthand, believe in this work.” Jimmy was involved in organizing and participating in NAPF’s Annual Sadako Peace Day event, where he frequently told the “Story of Sadako” to spread his message of peace.
