UN First Committee Overwhelmingly Endorses Nuclear Justice Resolution

On November 8, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly First Committee voted for the second year in a row on a draft resolution on addressing the legacy of nuclear weapons and providing victim assistance and environmental remediation to Member States affected by the use or testing of nuclear weapons (document A/C.1/79/L.74).

The resolution was brought forward by the Republics of Kazakhstan and Kiribati, co-sponsored by 39 additional states, and supported by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, including our Director of Policy and Advocacy, Christian Ciobanu. The overwhelming support was marked by 169 votes in favor. There were four votes against the resolution (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom), while six states abstained (China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Poland, United States).

The vote closely matched the vote on the resolution from the 2023 First Committee, when 171 states voted in favor of the resolution, the same four states voted against it, and six states abstained – with Poland voting in favor and the Democratic Republic of the Congo abstaining. The vote once again, leaves the nuclear armed states alone and isolated when it comes to the topic of nuclear justice. Compared to last year, the updated resolution requests that the Secretary General convene a one-day meeting on victim assistance and environmental remediation at the United Nations, at an appropriate time in 2026.
