Nuclear Testing in Kazakhstan
The Soviet Union conducted 456 nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan between 1949 and 1989. This included 116 atmospheric tests detonated on towers or from aircraft. After the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963, 340 underground tests were carried out in caves or boreholes.
Kazakhstan was among the first 50 States to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). It serves on the TPNW Coordination Committee, presided over the Third Meeting of States Parties, and co-chairs the informal working group on victim assistance and environmental remediation.
Impact on surroundings
Kazakh experts estimate over 1.5 million people were exposed to fallout over the years of the testing. The city of Kurchatov, located only 40 miles from the “experimental field” where over 100 atmospheric nuclear tests were detonated, suffered heavily from the Soviet testing. Some civilians and livestock were exposed to testing radiation purposefully as part of experiments. In 1997, it was reported that nearly half of the babies born at the prenatal center in the city of Semipalatinsk suffered from birth defects or other health problems, including death.
When the test site closed officially in 1991, the surrounding populations, including the city of Kurchatov, suffered an economic and population depression. Areas of the site remain contaminated and a lack of equipment and resources to remediate or treat radiation-related illnesses continue to cause significant problems.
Aftermath of the site
When the Soviet Union dissolved, a newly independent Kazakhstan inherited the site. However, they did not inherit information about the location of many of the tunnels and boreholes containing dangerous amounts of plutonium and other radioactive isotopes. Much of the information about the extent of the contamination from the testing at Semipalatinsk remained classified by the Soviet Union until the 1990s.
Due to the economic depression, and lack of other opportunities for work in the testing area, the contaminated experimental field became a hotspot for resource scavenging. People sought metals, plutonium, and other dangerous and heavily contaminated materials and components from the closed and abandoned tunnels and test sites.
A joint Kazakh-US-Russian project was eventually able to seal many of the tunnels and boreholes that contain sensitive material between 2005-2012.
