In July 2026, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) team —Ivana Hughes (President), Christian Ciobanu (Director of Policy and Advocacy), Anduin DeVos (Outreach Coordinator and Warheads to Windmills Coalition representative), and interns Ava Blakely, Skylar Mattice, and Ella Nguyen— visited Capitol Hill to meet with Congressional offices and staffers.
Our delegation met with staff from the offices of Representative Jamie Raskin, Representative Gabe Vasquez, Senator Edward J. Markey, Representative John Garamendi, and Representative Ted Lieu. We had engaging discussions with each office about our mission to educate on nuclear weapons harms, and our work towards nuclear justice and disarmament. We highlighted the upcoming International Meeting on Victim Assistance and Environmental Remediation, which we hope a representative from the State Department will attend. Our team is working with offices in Congress to make that request as strongly as possible in a joint letter to the State Department.
We were able to raise awareness in Congress about the devastating history of U.S. nuclear testing, highlighting especially the under-recognition of the harm done in Kiribati. Our team discussed potential legislative pathways to recognize this history and to combat the weakening norm against nuclear testing. Looking ahead, we spoke with staff about how Congress can engage with the first Review Conference for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which will take place at the end of November.
