NAPF Programs Public Events 23rd Annual Evening for Peace

On Saturday October 28th, 2006, The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation honored Bianca Jagger with its 2006 World Citizenship Award and Blase Bonpane with its Distinguished Peace Award. The Awards are presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated courageous leadership in the cause of peace.

Since 1984, the Foundation has honored some of the great peace leaders of our time with its Distinguished Peace Leadership Award, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Helen Caldicott, Jody Williams and King Hussein of Jordan. The Foundation's World Citizenship Award has been presented since 1998 to such luminaries as Ted Turner, Queen Noor of Jordan, Daisaku Ikeda and Dr. Robert Muller. In 2005 Daniel Ellsberg and the Honorable Douglas Roche, O.C. were honored.

Bianca Jagger is a leader in global efforts to secure human rights, human dignity and social, economic and legal justice for all. As an activist on the world stage, she takes an outspoken stand for peace and justice wherever she goes. Born in Nicaragua under the ruthless Somoza regime, she grew up witnessing the terror that was inflicted upon the civilian population. Later, as an adult living abroad, she began what would become her life-long campaign to stop crimes against humanity; the degradation of indigenous populations in Latin America; the exploitation of women and children and of the poor and infirm in war-torn countries; and the destruction of tropical rainforests. She is also a strong advocate of arms control and gun control. She is the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Right Livelihood Award, for her work on behalf of humanity.

Blase Bonpane is a former Maryknoll priest who was expelled from Guatemala in the 1960s for his efforts on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised. He is a co-founder of the Office of the Americas, and has served as its director since its inception in 1983, working as a tireless activist for peace and human rights around the world.  He is the host of the KPFK program World Focus on the Pacifica Radio Network.  In this capacity, he has become a leading voice for peace, human rights and social justice in the United States. He has received numerous awards recognizing his commitment to peace and justice, and is the author of two books: Guerrillas of Peace: Liberation Theology and the Central American Revolution; and Common Sense for the Twenty-First Century.
