Apply for the 2013 Summer WorkshopThe 2013 Peace Leadership Summer Workshop will take place from July 21-27, 2013 in Santa Barbara, California. We are limiting the number of participants in the summer workshop to 25, so please do not delay in submitting your application. Unfortunately, because of insurance restrictions, participants in the workshop must be 18 years of age or older. Click here to apply online. Frequently Asked Questions1. How much does the workshop cost? The workshop has different costs based on your lodging preference. If you have a room all to yourself ("single"), the cost is $1,050. If you share a room with one other person ("double"), the cost is $900. If you share a room with two other people ("triple"), the cost is $800. 2. I am going to have trouble affording the workshop. Can you lower the price for me? Comprehensive leadership workshops almost always cost several thousand dollars, but our priority is to make this workshop not only useful and transformative, but also affordable. Because we do not want money to prevent people from attending this workshop and receiving the training that can help them make a positive difference, we are only charging people for food and lodging, not the training itself. One drawback to charging such a low price is that any additional discount would have to be picked up on our end. We are a nonprofit and currently do not have the funding to cover these food and lodging costs. 3. What do the costs include? The costs include workshop materials along with food and lodging for six days at La Casa de Maria retreat center in Santa Barbara, CA. The costs do not include travel. 4. Are there any ways I can raise money to attend the workshop? One way is to get a local peace group, university, or organization to sponsor part or all of your trip, and in exchange you can give them an abbreviated Peace Leadership Workshop based on specific things they would like to learn. Paul Chappell will help you develop a workshop that suits their needs. There are many other creative ways that you can raise money to attend the workshop, and if you think of something that works please let us know so that we can share it with others. If you want to raise money to attend this workshop it is important to understand that this training is an investment not only in your education, but the future of our planet. Peace leadership skills are also life skills. An education in waging peace can improve our performance in the workplace, strengthen the quality of our human relationships, and empower us with the ideals and tools to better our lives and the world around us. 5. Are scholarships available? If we receive grant money for this workshop we would like to provide scholarships that can cover part or all of people’s lodging and travel. 6. Since the cost of the training is low, are you expecting any other obligations from participants in the workshop? Although we are only charging for food and lodging, we do not think of this training as free. In many leadership workshops the training is the most expensive component, and we also want you to pay for this training. But we want you to pay by taking action for a better world. We hope this workshop will give you a foundation for waging peace that you can build upon for the rest of your life. We hope that you will pay for this training by deepening your commitment to serve our country and planet. 7. If one lives near Santa Barbara and does not need to stay at Casa Maria for the duration of the training, is there a lower price? No. We put a lot of thought into that, and letting people commute to the workshop without staying at the retreat center presents some problems. First, people can benefit a lot from the discussions they will have with each other outside of the training, and staying at the same place builds camaraderie. Second, allowing some people to commute divides those attending the workshop into two separate groups (the group that is staying at the retreat center will bond tighter), which might cause cliques to form. Third, traffic can be bad in the morning and if people are staying at the retreat center then there is less concern about people showing up late and missing training. Fourth, since we are limiting the number of participants to around 20 or 25, allowing someone to commute takes away a slot from someone who is willing to stay at the retreat center.
