Emerging
Nuclear Threats | Top
The Foundation’s Emerging Nuclear Threats program is aimed at countering the new, more urgent nuclear threats from existing and potential nuclear weapons states, as well as non-state entities. These risks include the increased planning for the use of nuclear weapons, nuclear terrorism, and the continued threat of nuclear proliferation. The program seeks to decrease these threats through education, analysis, policy recommendations and advocacy.
The Foundation will be developing and disseminating a report to Congress on current US nuclear policy and what can be done to change these policies to create broader security arrangements internationally.
The Foundation will participate in the 2008 Preparatory Committee meetings for the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference to be held in Geneva, Switzerland in April-May 2008.
The Foundation has nearly completed a book-length publication, At the Nuclear Precipice: Nuclear Weapons and the Abandonment of International Law, based upon its 2006 International Law Symposium. Another book, based on a 2007 conference the Foundation co-sponsored with the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research on “Meeting the Challenge of Abolishing Nuclear Weapons,” is also being produced.
Ongoing analysis and policy recommendations in this area are offered and distributed on a regular basis. |
Turn the TideCampaign: Charting a New Course for US Nuclear Policy | Top
The Turn the Tide Campaign is a national online advocacy campaign seeking to educate and mobilize concerned citizens on key nuclear issues and to encourage their communication on with their elected representatives and other appropriate officials. The campaign focuses on policy recommendations and advocacy opportunities for citizens. The campaign promotes implementation of US nuclear policies that will lead to halting proliferation; stopping new nuclear weapons development and production; addressing health effects and environmental cleanup; and seeking to achieve complete global disarmament.
The campaign is coordinated through the Foundation’s office in Washington DC. Legislative and policy alerts are sent to our ever-growing list of online activists. We will also be working collaboratively with community grassroots organizations across the country and with DC-based organizations to leverage the strength of the campaign.
