In cultivating a culture of peace it is important to provide incentive and support to those furthering peaceful values. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation administers a series of annual contests and awards to encourage individuals to address and personalize issues of peace and security and to show appreciation to those exhibiting exceptional devotion to promoting peace.

Distinguished Peace Leadership AwardThe Distinguished Peace Leadership Award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated courageous leadership in the cause of peace. The Foundation has, on occasion, also presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for peace leadership. The award is presented at the Foundation’s Annual Evening for Peace in Santa Barbara, CA. Instituted in 1984, past recipients of the award include His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Captain Jacques Cousteau, Dr. Helen Caldicott, Jody Williams, King Hussein of Jordan, Walter Cronkite and Daniel Ellsberg. |
World Citizenship AwardThe World Citizenship Award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the human family. This award was inaugurated in 1998 and is generally presented at the Foundation’s Annual Evening for Peace in Santa Barbara, CA. Past recipients of the award include Ted Turner, Queen Noor of Jordan, Daisaku Ikeda, Frederick Franck, Robert Muller, Harry Belafonte, Mayors for Peace and Kimmie Weeks (special Youth award). |
Lifetime Achievement AwardThe Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to individuals who have made a lifetime commitment to pursuing peace. Past recipients of the award include: Dr. Linus Pauling; Sir Joseph Rotblat; Hon. Douglas Roche, O.C.; and Judge Christopher Weeramantry. |
Swackhamer Disarmament Video ContestThe Swackhamer Disarmament Video Contest is an annual contest in which contestants submit short (2-3 minute) videos on an aspect of nuclear disarmament (the specific topic is announced on February 1 each year). The deadline for submissions is April 1st. |
Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry AwardsAn annual series of awards to encourage poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. The Poetry Awards include three age categories: Adult, Youth 13-18, and Youth 12 & Under. The deadline for submissions is July 1st. Guidelines and past winners are available here. The Foundation has published book of the winning poems for the first seven years of the Awards, The Poetry of Peace (2003), and the second seven years of the Awards, Never Enough Flowers: The Poetry of Peace II (2012). |
