IRENA’s main objective is to foster and promote the large-scale adoption of renewable energy worldwide. This overall objective can be broken down into a number of concrete targets:
• Improved regulatory frameworks for renewable energy through enhanced policy advice;
• Improvements in the transfer of renewable energy technology;
• Progress on skills and know-how for renewable energy;
• A scientifically sound information basis through applied policy research;
• Better financing of renewable energy.
By pursuing this objective, IRENA will help to reduce the pressure on finite energy sources, provide a sound basis for meeting future energy demand, stabilize energy prices, improve access to energy particularly for the world’s poorest, combat climate change and increase energy security. At the same time, it will contribute to economic growth and job creation.
IRENA’s target membership includes small and large countries, both industrialized and developing.
IRENA will concentrate its work on the needs of governments and regions in the area of renewable energy. It will provide its services as and when requested by member states or groups of member states. It will not involve itself of its own accord in a country's energy policy or try to enforce its policies.
IRENA will work in conjunction with existing organizations by institutionalizing specific advisory committees, thereby improving the cooperation between them. It will not aim to supplant or replicate existing activity by governments, NGOs and development organizations aimed at promoting renewable energy.
The objective of IRENA, as defined in its statutes, shall be as follows:
“The overall objective of IRENA is to accelerate and enhance the global application of renewable energy sources among its members and throughout the world. Their deployment will help to promote an environmentally sound economic development, to overcome poverty, to conserve the natural environment, and help to avoid international tensions and conflicts caused by shortages of energy supply. The use of renewable energy sources will lead to the stabilization of the global climate, healthier living conditions and a secure energy supply for every country in the world. The Agency shall support energy saving and energy efficiency activities.” |
